Pada tahun 2015 kapasitas pembangkit nasional sebesar 54.687 MW di tahun 2019 meningkat sebesar 69.978 MW dan diprediksi tahun 2020 sebesar 78.093 MW.

Selain Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), pembangunan PLTP di Indonesia banyak dilakukan oleh PERTAMINA melalui anak usahanya PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy. Sejak tahun 2015 sampai tahun 2020 pembangkit milik PLN hanya berkapasitas 577,50 MW, sementara total kapasitas pembangkit yang dikelola PLN terus mengalami peningkatan dari 36.052,18 MW di tahun 2015 menjadi 47.021,49 MW di tahun 2020.

Sementara perkembangan kapasitas PLTP non PLN juga terlihat terus meningkat, walaupun kontribusinya terhadap kapasitas nasional relatif masih kecil. Pada tahun 2015 jumlah kapasitas PLTP non PLN sebesar 18.605,54 MW, di tahun 2019 meningkat sebesar 27.292,28 MW dan diprediksi tahun 2020 sebesar 31.071,78 MW.

Indonesia is listed as one of the countries that has the largest potential of geothermal resources in the world, the potential is estimated at 28.52 Gigawatts (GW). With such great potential, Indonesia continues to boost the construction of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP), to reduce dependence on the use of coal, whose sources are dwindling.

According to CDMI Consulting's research, in the last six years the national generating capacity has continued to increase, although the increase is relatively slow, averaging 2.3% per year.
